8 Essential Items to Pack for Your Fall Trip to the Smokies

Fall in the SmokiesThis time of year, the weather can be unpredictable in the Smoky Mountains. It can be forty degrees in the morning and seventy degrees in the afternoon. You never know, we may even get the season’s first snow flurries while you are here! If you are planning to visit Bryson City during the Fall, it is a good idea to make sure you pack for a wide range of temperatures.

Whether you are going hiking on the Appalachian Trail, mountain biking at Tsali, enjoying the scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway or simply enjoying the sunset from the deck of your Watershed Cabin, it is important to dress correctly for the weather. If you aren’t dressed for the weather, you may become too uncomfortable to fully enjoy Fall  in the Smoky Mountains. So, in order to make sure you have a great time, we want you to make sure you know what to pack!

Dressing in layers is the best way to go and it’s a good idea to avoid cotton if it is going to be raining. Cotton holds moisture and draws heat away from your body, making it an uncomfortable choice for cool, wet weather. Synthetic, fast-drying fabrics or wool would be a more comfortable choice.

8 Essential items to pack include:

1- Sturdy pair of shoes what will support you on uneven or wet terrain

2- Warm socks (wool or fleece will keep you warm even if they get wet)

3- Synthetic/quick-dry shirt and pants

4- Rain jacket

5- Fleece or wool sweater

6- A warm hat

7- Gloves (wool or fleece is best)

8- A flashlight (when it gets dark in the mountains, it gets DARK!)

You don’t have to run out and spend a fortune on the latest hi-tech gear to prepare for your trip. You can find what you need in most department stores or in your local outdoor store. If you don’t know what to get or find yourself in the mountains without adequate apparel, don’t worry! We have several high-quality outdoor stores in our area that have a great selection of outdoor gear and friendly, knowledgeable staff who will be glad to help you find what you need.

Now that you know what to bring with you, it’s time to start planning your adventure to the beautiful Smoky Mountains!
