This weekend, Nantahala Outdoor Center, located just west of Bryson City, will host its annual fall celebration, NOCtoberfest.
The festival will feature great German-themed food and beverage specials, lots of fun contests and games and of course, the unforgettable Great Pumpkin Pursuit.
What is the Great Pumpkin Pursuit, you ask? It is a free-for-all through Nantahala Falls where competitors endeavor to collect as many pumpkins as possible as they are tossed by costumed staffers from a flotilla of rafts. Each pumpkin serves as a “raffle ticket” of sorts, earning the bearer a chance to win prizes including backpacks, paddling gear and gift cards to the NOC Outfitter’s Store. Feel free to wear your costume on the water as well – so long as you can fit a PFD over it, that is!
If you are not interested in getting on the water, there will be a pumpkin decorating contest and costume contest as well. And you can enjoy wonderful music from Bear Down Easy and Playing on the Planet as you sample some great local brews by the bonfire. Does it really get much better than that?
