This September, Bryson City will host the 2013 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships on the Nantahala River. This exciting event will feature the top 100 freestyle athletes from around the world, with representatives from 17 countries; Australia, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and of course, the USA.
If you enjoy watching the flips, spins and tricks of freestyle skaters and snowboarders, you’ll love freestyle kayaking! It is by far the most entertaining style of boating there is! Freestyle kayakers compete by performing a variety of tricks like cartwheels, loops (full flips) and other moves with more colorful names like Roundhouse, Phonics Monkey, McNasty and the Donkey Flip! Each athlete has a set time to perform as many different moves as possible and can earn additional points for “style”.
More than being just another kayak competition, the 2013 ICF Canoe Freestyle World Championships are a celebration of the vibrant cultural and paddling history here in the Smoky Mountains. In addition to watching the world’s best freestylers show their stuff on the 2013 Wave, spectators will enjoy live music from regional bands, a craft fair specializing in traditional Appalachian crafts, and interactive activities for kids. Other featured events will include a raft race, Cherokee tribal dancing and cultural presentations.
Add it all together and there may not be a better time to visit Bryson City!
