Roughing It In Style – What Do I Pack?

Spring time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Spring time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This time of year, the weather can be unpredictable in the mountains. We can have snow one day and 60-degree temperatures the next! If you are planning to visit the area, it is a good idea to make sure you pack for a wide range of temperatures.

Whether you are going hiking on the Appalachian Trail, mountain biking at Tsali, enjoying the scenery on the Blue Ridge Parkway or simply enjoying the sunset from the deck of your Watershed Cabin, it is important to dress correctly for the weather. If you are not dressed properly, you may become so uncomfortable that you are unable to enjoy yourself or in extreme cases, you may be at risk of injury or even hypothermia. So, in order to make sure you have a great time, we want you to make sure to pack the right clothes! Dressing in layers is the best way to go and it’s a good idea to avoid cotton if it is going to be raining. Cotton holds moisture and leeches body heat, making it a risky, uncomfortable choice for cool, wet weather. Synthetic, fast-drying fabrics or wool would be a safer, more comfortable and therefore, much happier choice!

Essential gear would include a sturdy pair of shoes that will do well on uneven terrain, wool socks, a synthetic fast drying shirt and pair of pants, a fleece sweater and a waterproof jacket. With that said, you don’t have to run out and spend a fortune on the latest hi-tech gear to prepare for your trip. You can find what you need in most department stores or in your local outdoor store. If you don’t know what to get or find yourself in the mountains already without adequate gear, don’t worry! We have several high-quality outdoor stores in our area. The outfitters on our list all have a great selection of outdoor gear and friendly, knowledgeable staff who will be glad to help you find what you need.
